Don’t Miss These 2016’s 5 Top Electric Shavers for Men

For men who shave, the job of finding the perfect razor can be a long (and sometimes painful) one. While manual razors have been popular since the introduction of shaving, they, unfortunately, come with the risk of pain, irritation, and stubble. Perhaps this is why most men have turned to electric shavers to help eliminate excess facial hair. Surprisingly these have been around for almost 100 years, with the very first electric razor being designed and patented by none other than Colonel Jacob Schick in 1928. Fortunately for consumers today, the designs of the original electric razor have come a long way. No longer are men plagued by short cords or bulky products, as electric shavers have evolved to be compact, convenient, and even cordless!

If you’re on the hunt for an electric shaver, store shelves are lined with options to choose from. So how do you choose which is right for you? It all comes down to looking at the following factors:

  • Performance
How well does the shaver actually work? Is it slow or difficult to maneuver?
  • Comfort
Does the shaver glide comfortably along the skin and especially in contour areas?
  • Longevity
Will it last for a long time or be something you can only enjoy for a couple of months?
  • Value
Is it worth the price or can you get something better for a little less/more?
  • Results
How close is the shave? Are there stray hairs and rough patches left behind on the skin? Will you have a lot of irritation and razor burn?
  • Durability
Is the electric shaver going to break the very first time it’s dropped? Is it sturdy and have good weight?
  • Steps to clean
Will you have to clean this on your own or will a cleaning station do that for you?

1. Series 9 9055cc Wet & Dry Electric Razor by Braun

braun-series-9-9095cc

Let’s get started with the details:

– Warranty: 2 Years
– Weight: 2 lbs
– Type: Optifoil with Four Cutting Elements
– Safety: Equipped with Blade Lock
– Setting: Wet or Dry
– Charge Time: 60 minutes; 5-minute quick charge mode
– Power: Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery
– Dimensions: 9 x 3 x 6 in.

Braun has been around since 1921 and is still one of the most well-known razor brands today. Braun’s advancements have been notable over the years, with the Series 9 truly raising the bar. Even if you’re familiar with the company as a whole, learning more about this model in particular is recommended. In the higher price range, it’s easy to see why some would be hesitant about purchasing this type of luxury electric shaver. However, upon inspection of it, it’s clearly one of the best on the market today. The design begins with a smooth exterior that has some weight to it. This isn’t a shaver that feels cheap because it’s made from a high-quality plastic. To create a sleek look, it has a plastic chrome finish and looks to be made incredibly well.

Upon powering it up, you can hear the quiet four-way shear system running, which promises to deliver a very close shave that’s better than any foil electric shaver you’ve likely used in the past. This is because the four-way shear uses two Optifoil foils, a head that pivots sideways, four cutting elements, and a floating grill. Further enhancing this model is the fact that it features 40,000 cross-cutting actions per minute to get even a messy shave done quite well.

For those interested in the cutting elements, this razor features two: the direct & cut and the hyper-lift & cut. If you are shaving an area with hairs in no particular direction, then the direct & cut will help. For hairs that lie flat, such as those in the chin or neck, the hyper-lift and cut will raise and then cut those, so you get a closer shave. Will this get all the hairs the first time? Just like most razors, probably not. However, it should be able to get almost all in just a couple of swipes. If you don’t want to spend a lot of time in front of the mirror, this shaver is going to be your best time-saving friend.

When it comes to the additional features of the Series 9, the extensive battery life is one of the highlights. It can last up to an hour on one charge and even has a digital display letting you know how much time is left before you need to re-charge. Running low on time? There’s a five-minute quick charge option that will come in handy when you need it the most. Fortunately, when it is time to charge, you have a lot to look forward to. The charging/cleaning station that comes with this unit removes hairs from the blades and automatically determines which cleaning program to use while your razor is charging. This model does also come with a pop-up trimmer that can be used for cleaning up a beard, mustache, or sideburns. However, there’s not much notable about this, as it’s the same as you’d find on any other razor that offers this add-on.

The Braun Series 9 as a whole offers more than just the 9095cc model (which is wet and dry). There are also dry models that are a bit more expensive for those who don’t prefer to shave wet. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because this model is an improvement from the Series 7 799cc by Braun. We feel it’s important to note more about this earlier version so you can compare it to the latest release.

Series 7 799cc Men’s Top Shaver by Braun

braun-series-7-799cc

When this was released, it was one of the most advanced and high-quality electric shavers on the market (much like its successor). Still available today, it features German-engineered foil shave technology. In order to provide a comfortable shave, it presents a pivoting head that’s incredibly flexible and intuitive to the contours of the face. In addition to this, it offers three different shaving modes, including: extra sensitive, normal, and heavily bearded. For anyone who has a tough time dealing with different skin types, this is a feature you’re going to LOVE. With ActiveLift and Optifoil systems engineered into the product as well, it’s easy to see why so many favor this premium razor.

2. The Arc5 ES-LV95-S and Arc5 ES-LV81-K by Panasonic

Let’s get started with the details:

– Warranty: 2 Years
– Weight: 1 lb
– Type: Optifoil with Five Cutting Elements
– Safety: Equipped with Blade Lock
– Setting: Wet or Dry
– Charge Time: 60 minutes to 90 minutes
– Power: Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery
– Dimensions: 6 x 3 x 2 in.

Although this shaver didn’t rank as high as the Series 9 by Braun, it’s still a solid choice. It’s another high-priced option, but for good reason. Think of it like a luxury car, as it presents the best features that give you more for your money. We feel this is an excellent choice for men who don’t have the typical facial mane. It does an excellent job with messy as well as thick facial hair that’s hard to tame down with a traditional electric razor.

These models are unique because they are the first 5-bladed linear electric razors in the world! Like the previously mentioned product, they’re also foil shavers that have five cutting elements (which is where the Arc5 name was derived from). To ensure a comfortable and close shave, it has reverse-taped foils and nanoblades that swivel 30 degrees. In addition to this, it has a pivoting head that will minimize the risk of irritation. The 14,000 RPM motor is also worth mentioning, as is the LCD display on the ES-lV95-S and the digital display on the ES-LV81-K.

Additional features of this shaver include the fact that it’s 100% waterproof, so it’s perfect for those who use in the shower (or even in the tub if you like to relax while you shave). In addition to this, it comes with an automatic cleaning and charging station that refreshes your shaver so it’s ready for you the next time you need it. For those who have mustaches or beards, there’s an attached trimmer as well. With so much to offer, are you wondering why this isn’t #1 on the list? While it does rank close, we found that the Arc5 isn’t as sleek or small as the Braun Series 9. It’s a bit bulky and doesn’t feel as comfortable to hold (which can affect your shave). The only other notable flaw is that it just doesn’t perform as well as the top choice, although it does do an excellent job overall.

For anyone who is on a budget, the Arc5 is going to delight. It’s about $100 cheaper than the Series 9 by Braun, and performs almost just as well. If you’re looking for something comparable to this, check out this shaver:

Arc 4 ES-LA93K Foil Shaver by Panasonic

panasonic-es-la93k-arc-4

This budget shaver has the same motor as the Arc5 but only has 4 cutting blades rather than 5. This may make it more attractive to you, as a lot of men prefer fewer blades rather than more (depending on personal preference). Although not as luxurious as others, it’s still a premium option that provides a close and comfortable shave. It also features Slit Foil Technology that catches and trims longer hairs so all those on your face are uniform rather than sporadic. In addition to this, it comes with a charging and cleaning dock and is incredibly quiet so you can use it day or night without waking up the rest of the house.

3. Series 9000 Wet/Dry Electric Shavers by Philips Norelco

philips-norelco-series-9000

Let’s get started with the details:

– Warranty: 2 Years
– Weight: 1.8 lbs
– Type: Rotary
– Setting: Wet or Dry
– Charge Time: 50 minutes
– Power: Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery
– Dimensions: 6 x 3 x 2 in

Not everyone enjoys using a foil shaver, although they have gained popularity in recent years. For those who prefer the rotary razor, the Series 9000 shavers by Philips Norelco are excellent options.

By just looking at this you can tell that it’s different from those designed in the past. However, while the look is a bit unusual, it does provide a good grip that contours to the hand nicely (so you can get a closer shave). The head of the body is elevated to provide a better tilt than most other razors are able to accomplish. This design is actually unique to Philips, as they have aptly named in their 8-Direction Contour Detect Heads. With three layers of grooves, these get hair in all direction and of all lengths. This means whether you’re dealing with stubble or multi-directional hair, the blades will be able to get them. To make shaving the jaw and neck quicker and more comfortable, this shaver also features the Super Lift & Cut Action System, which has dual blades built into the heads.

Out of all the different rotary shavers we tested, this series by Norelco was one of the most outstanding. It gave a closer shave than all others and was fairly enjoyable to use. While it won’t give you the close shave of a manual shaver or even a foil shaver, it’s still an excellent option that can leave you fresh without irritation afterward. When looking into this series, you will find there are three different models offered. The digital screen on the S9721/84 is really what makes this model the most attractive (and priced higher by roughly $80), although all perform quite well individually.

To compare the previous model, which was first known as the SensoTouch 3D until it was renamed the Series 8000, take a look at the features it offered.

Series 8000 Shavers by Philips Norelco (previously the SensoTouch 3D)

philips-norelco-sensotouch-3d-1250

When first introduced, this series was actually priced higher than the 9000 was introduced at. Due to this fact, the Series 9000 has taken over its spot on this list for simply being more affordable. This is actually one of the only major differences between the two series, as the performance on both is nearly identical. For those looking at the details, they’ll likely notice the major difference is that the technology names for the Series 8000 is slightly changed in the Series 9000. Check out the name differences below.

Series 8000

– Jet Clean + cleaning system
– Description of shaving system: Speed XL Shaving Heads, Super Lift & Cut, DualPrecision System, and UltraTrack Shaving Heads
– GyroFlex 3D for contour control

Series 9000

– Smart Clean cleaning system
– Description of shaving system: Super Lift & Cut Action and V-Track Precision Blade System
– 8-Direction ContourDetect Heads for contour control

4. The CoolTec Men’s Shaving System by Braun

braun-cooltec-mens-shaving-system

Let’s get started with the details:

– Warranty: 2 Years
– Weight: 3 lb
– Type: Foil with 3 Cutting Elements
– Safety: No Blade Lock
– Setting: Wet or Dry
– Charge Time: 60 minutes
– Power: Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery
– Dimensions: 6 x 6 x 10 in.

Another winner by Braun! If you’re on a budget and still want a high-quality electric shaver, then this is your best bet. It’s priced slightly over $100 and delivers as well as one that easily costs double. What’s unique about it is a fact that it’s made with an aluminum cooling bar. This serves as a barrier that helps reduce irritation and razor burn, providing you with moisture and a more comfortable shave overall. The cool feeling of the bar is also pretty nice if your skin does become irritated and is something a bit different from what most men are used to.

The CoolTec works hard to give you a very close shave, even though it has only three cutting elements. Two of these move independently, which is part of the reason you can still get a good shave with this model. Another excellent feature is that it comes with a cleaning station that lubricates and charges your razor every time it’s used. There’s even a fresh lemon scent bonus you’ll smell when the cleaning is finished (hopefully you like the smell of lemons). We can’t finish this review without stating the downsides, with the main being the fact that you can’t use it with gels, lotions, or even shaving foams. This is a big reason why so many opt out from buying this wet/dry model, even though it has a lot to offer for an affordable price.

We think that this electric shaver is genuinely a great option, but obviously it’s not the best electric razor on the market since we have it ranked fourth on our list. However, if you aren’t a heavy-duty shaver who has to do this every day, it will give a pretty good shave and can help lessen irritation as an added bonus.

5. F5-5800 Rechargeable Foil Shaver by Remington

remington-f5-5800

– Warranty: 2 Years
– Weight: 1 lbs
– Type: Foil with 2 Cutting Elements
– Safety: No Blade Lock
– Setting: Not wet/dry
– Charge Time: 60 minutes; 5 minute quick-charge option
– Power: Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery
– Dimensions: 9 x 3.5 x 5 in.

In the office, our faces are shaven, and we’re running out of people to chase down with razors, but we’re still going to deliver you #5 on the list. It was easy for us to give this spot to the F5-5800 by Remington due to the fact that it’s incredibly affordable and does a pretty solid job with delivery. In fact, many people in our office were surprised that it was only around $40, which normally means you’re going to have a bad shave with a lot of irritation. Fortunately, that’s not the case, because the smart design reduces a lot of the reasons why most people experience razor burn in the first place.

Diving into the details, this foil shaver features an intercept trimmer between its two independently-floating foils. What does this mean for you? It means longer hairs are trimmed to be uniform with the rest of your facial hairs, making everything even on the playing field of your face. After that, the blades run along and get rid of the stubble, so there are no stray hairs or even rough spots left behind. It’s designed in a way that glides over the contours of your face as well, so you won’t feel a lot of irritation or discomfort while you’re cruising along. Although the lower price means you won’t get one of the cleaning stations that so many love, it still cleans pretty easily. All you have to do is rinse it under the faucet, and you’re done.
